The Housing Taskforce of Rural East Texas (Anderson and Cherokee County Housing Coalition) conducted its second Point in Time Homeless Survey on January 31, 2005.  Paula Harper, consultant for Texas Homeless Network provided training with our volunteers the day of our homeless survey.
On April 13, THN will present the “No Child Left Behind” workshop at Frankston ISD (Anderson County).  This workshop was requested by some of our local school districts as the result of our “Point in Time” Homeless Survey conducted in January. Our public schools need more information to assist homeless school children. Also community and faith-based organizations serving homeless children can benefit from this training. The workshop is free but registration is required. Contact Texas Homeless Network (thn.org) to register.

The City of Tyler was a participant in the 2005 National Community Development Week. The event recognizes the significant contributions the Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) Program has provided to Tyler, as well as to local governments throughout the United States. On April 7, 2005, the City celebrated by sponsoring a Community Development Fair at the Glass Recreation Center.

Abilene Hope Haven, Inc. received a matching grant for $1,750,000.00 from the Shelton Family Foundation of Abilene, March 7th to be used for the construction of its third facility.  This facility will house 70, 18-21 year olds with a focus on youth ageing out of Foster Care.  There will be individual rooms for 30 males, 30 females, and 10 single mothers.  The program will emphasize education and life skills only, while providing all the basic needs for the residents. Construction of the 26,000 sq. ft. facility will begin as soon as the matching funds are secured.  We are hoping to have the facility operational by the start of the school year in 2006.  Hope Haven currently serves 24 single adults at its original facility and 14 families at Hope Haven “Too”, which opened March 1, 2002.
