Searching for Sam
Face the Homeless is a grassroots campaign that sparked from a necessecity to educate the community from a statewide perspective through art, advocacy and creating awareness about homelessness. This campaign reaches out, in particular, to homeless service providers, mainstream communities, and the Texas Legislature. Our newest project is called Searching for Sam. Texas Homeless Network is partnering with a man that has lost his brother to homelessness and has decided to dedicate the next year to finding him.

Never in a million years would I have thought my television career would lead me down this path. For 20 years I have been a sportscaster all over the Texas region. I left TV about a year ago to pursue other business adventures, but it seems that God has brought me back.  My brother Sam is homeless. He has been missing for over 3 years and the unknown has caused myself and my family much heartache. It is my mission to not only find out what happened to my brother, but also to bring more awareness about the homeless epidemic and who these people really are. They are brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, daughters and sons. Many believe that they choose this lifestyle because they are lazy. I want the world to know that laziness is not the source of the homeless, but instead can be mental illness, loss of job, domestic violence, lack of affordable housing, lack of health insurance, and lack of a living wage.  My brother Sam is bipolar and I know in my heart that is what is keeping him from a family that loves him and would accept him unconditionally. Let the journey begin.

Project Description

Chris Yates, 3 time Emmy award winner, will spend the next year searching for his brother, Sam, and documenting every emotional moment of his journey. He will not only spend time doing personal interviews with his family, but will also spend time on the streets giving a face to the homeless. This documentary will show America how powerful mental illness is. Strong enough to pull a man away from a family who had nothing but love for him. It is much easier to walk by the homeless man on the street than to care about who he is, where he came from and why he ended up in these circumstances. We plan to open the eyes of people all over the world about this growing epidemic of mental illness through this personal, emotional journey.
