Homelessness in Texas

A second analysis of the 1999 statewide survey

Texas Homelesss Network

Introduction

The Texas Homeless Network conducted in 1999, the “Homelessness in Texas” statewide survey. The report of the survey presented some descriptive statistics of the homeless population in Texas. For example, proportion of males and females, racial/ethnical distribution, proportion of people that receive each type of assistance available, and educational attainment.

The purpose of this report is to present a deeper statistical analysis of the 1999 survey, with focus on using the data available to test hypotheses. This report addresses many relevant questions about the homeless population in Texas.  Questions concerning the demographic distribution, age, gender, race/ethnicity, reasons for homelessness, duration of homelessness, migration, family, children, education, employment, sources of income, services, and needs are covered.

This report was developed by Walter Lana Leite, a Ph.D. student of Quantitative Methods at the University of Texas at Austin, during his internship at Texas Homeless Network.
