Reasons of Homelessness


The survey, in order to obtain the reasons of homelessness, asked the respondents to choose between 11 possible reasons. The respondents were allowed to mark as many as applied. The reasons of homelessness used in the survey were:

  1. Divorce
  2. Unemployment
  3. Unable to pay rent/mortgage
  4. Argument with family/friends
  5. Family member or personal illness
  6. Alcohol/drug abuse
  7. Physical or mental disabilities
  8. Family violence
  9. Prison/jail
  10. Welfare time limits
  11. Other

Only the reasons 1-10 will be considered in this analysis, since "other" corresponds to a variety of reasons.

3. Do homeless individuals in different age groups have different reasons to leave home?

4. Do individuals of different races/ethnicities have different reasons to leave home?

5. Do married, divorced, separated and single homeless individuals have different reasons to become homeless?

6. Do homeless people who have family living with them have different reasons to become homeless from individuals without family living with them? Are men and women that have family living with them different in their reasons of homelessness?

7. Do homeless people with different education have different reasons to become homeless?
