Six days from losing their home: How flexible funding kept one family housed

Through Housing Solutions, Texas Homeless Network is testing flexible, community-driven approaches to family homelessness across Texas. One of those tools, the Innovation Fund, provides local agencies with flexible dollars to address urgent barriers that traditional funding often can’t cover, helping families stay housed and move toward long-term stability.

Angela’s story shows what that flexibility can make possible when a family faces an unexpected crisis.

Angela and her three children were working toward stability through a Rapid Rehousing program. But when a delay in federal funding temporarily interrupted their rental assistance, the family suddenly faced a gap they couldn’t afford to cover on their own.

Angela was actively looking for work, but another obstacle stood in her way: her identification had expired. She immediately began the process of replacing it, only to encounter an unexpected eight-month delay in receiving the documentation she needed to move forward with employment.

Meanwhile, keeping the family safely housed was especially critical. One of Angela’s children has a serious heart condition and relies on a pacemaker and home monitoring equipment that must remain connected to electricity. Losing their home wouldn’t simply mean losing a roof over their heads. It could jeopardize the stability and safety her child depended on.

Angela did everything she could to keep her family afloat. Her local housing provider described her as an “outstanding participant” who remained committed to the program despite one setback after another.

But eventually, she ran out of options.

With just six days remaining before eviction, THN’s Innovation Funds stepped in.

Flexible funding covered the family’s past-due rent, preventing their eviction and keeping Angela and her children safely housed. Just as importantly, that assistance bought the family the time they needed to transition into public housing, creating a more sustainable path forward.

Since then, things have begun to change. Angela has received the documentation she had been waiting for, opening new possibilities for employment. Her youngest child was also approved for disability benefits, adding much-needed income to the household.

A family that was six days away from homelessness now has a foundation to build on.

Without Innovation Funds, one temporary gap in assistance could have pushed Angela and her children into homelessness, making their path back to stability longer, harder, and more costly.

Instead, flexible funding arrived at exactly the right moment.

Your support helps ensure that when a family is doing everything they can to move forward, one unexpected setback doesn’t cost them their home.
